March 8 – Adelaide
We have been looking forward to visiting the city, Adelaide,
because it was my mother’s name. When someone was unsure of how to spell her
name, she would say “it’s just like the city in Australia”. Well, sadly she never got to visit this
“prettiest town the Ozzies Ever Made”, but it lives up to its name
.
Adelaide is the capital city of South Australia with a
population of 1,291,660. Named in honor
of Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen, the wife of King William IV, the city was
founded in 1836 as the planned capital for a freely-settled British province in
Australia. Colonel William Light, one of Adelaide’s founding fathers, designed
the city and chose its location close to the River Torrens. His design set out
Adelaide in a grid layout, interspaced by wide boulevards and large public
squares, and entirely surrounded by parklands.
Adelaide also is known for their award-winning wine from the
nearby Barossa Valley. Our excursion was
suppose to give us a look at the city as we made our way to wine country,
however, it only gave us a glimpse from the outskirts due to time
restrictions. We were a little
disappointed with that. The wine tours
were nice and the drive through the Valley was beautiful and sunny!!
Enjoy the pictures.
Cheers!
